Imparting a sense of history and the ravages of time to a canvas is a laborious process that can take several months to complete. Techniques include gluing a foundation consisting of as many as ten layers of South African newspapers to the canvas, then applying heavy encrustations of earth toned oil paint. These are supplemented by cheesecloth and fabric, found objects and other materials. Paint is scraped, incised , sponged and daubed.
Although no brushes are used in the process, the complex works rival the best abstract paintings found in modern art, skillfully negotiating the paths between primitive impulse, spirituality, and the refined aesthetics and principles of high art.
